Private escapes: Song Saa

Song Saa 300x336

Koh Rong Archipelago, Cambodia: This is big news. A swashbuckling number working on full throttle in little old never-seen-anything-like-it Cambodia. Rory and Melita Hunter are the owners—they’re from Australia and had been renovating French Cambodian houses on the mainland before embarking on this. They purchased the island on a whim. Here, on this teeny speck amid blue-green waters, is a bolt of fresh energy with pedigree. The head of housekeeping comes over after spending a decade at Amansara; the chef used to be at North Island in Seychelles. As you whip into your villa—close together it has to be said, but fully soundproofed—all you will see at first is how sleek and beautiful it is, but later something else draws you in. Melita is a very clever sculptural artist who’s pulled in beautifully gnarled pieces of wood and broken shards of boat to make these zones feel incredibly smart but also utterly handmade—a twist and turn on island elegance. There’s an overwater restaurant, a champagne bar and a spa that’s being built on a separate island reached by a wooden walkway. Remember that it really is tiny and the water will be your world, but Song Saa is a beauty in the making.
